A
village panchayat must have only 500 voters.
Local
bodies across Tamil Nadu will soon have more women representatives. Come
October, a special bill that was introduced in February 2016, by Chief Minister
J Jayalalithaa will be implemented.
The Deccan Chronicle reported that the state development
ministry and rural authorities have intimated all the district collectors to
implement delimitation and increase the number of wards in the civic bodies.
DMK councillor Kalaichelvi
Jothikumar told the daily, “The wards in civic bodies were classified 25 years
back. Since then no efforts were taken to delimit the ward boundaries and this
is a good move as it will decentralise the public and their civic issues.” A
village panchayat should have only 500 voters but, currently, there are several
wards in the state where there are more than 1500 voters.
After the
new delimitation, civic polls will be held in the state. Congress councillor
Sheela Prabhakaran of Tambaram municipality welcomed the move as more women
will have representation in the council halls.
