Meet Solarin, World's costliest smartphone priced at Rs 9 Lakh

Sunday, 5 June 2016

Bringing speculations to an end, Israeli start-up Sirin Labs has officially unveiled its high-end $14,000 (over Rs 9 lakh) Android smartphone that promises chip-to-chip 256-bit encryption similar to what the military uses to protect communications. Dubbed as the 'Rolls Royce of smartphones', the device called Solarin is activated via a physical security switch on the back and was launched on Tuesday at an event in London, venturebeat.com reported.
Solarin packs in Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, promises "far superior" Wi-Fi connectivity, has a 23.8MP rear camera and a 5.5 inch IPS LED 2K resolution screen. For the Solarin promises "the most advanced privacy technology, currently unavailable outside the agency world", Sirin Labs has joined hands with communication security firm KoolSpan. According to Sirin Labs, it wanted to "create the most advanced mobile device that combined the highest privacy settings, operated faster than any other phone, built with the best materials from around the world." "Cyberattacks are endemic across the globe. This trend is on the increase.
Solarin is pioneering new, uncompromising privacy measures to provide customers with greater confidence and the reassurance necessary to handle business-critical information," Tal Cohen, CEO and cofounder of Sirin Labs, was quoted as saying. "Every single design decision and material choice was based on performance and functionality," added Fredrik Öijer, vice president (products) at Sirin Labs. The device for the rich and famous is available at Sirin Labs' first retail store in Mayfair (34 Bruton Place), London from June 1 and at Harrods, Knightsbridge from June 30. The luxury smartphone is not a new phenomenon. In 2006, Nokia launched a $310,000 "Signature Cobra" device in 2006 and the $5,000 "Constellation" smartphone in 2011. In 2012, Nokia dropped luxury-phone brand maker Vertu. After leaving Nokia, Vertu brought its first Android device "Vertu Ti" to market. According to media reports, the smartphone was priced at a whopping Rs 6,49,990 in India. It has dual-core 1.7GHz processor along with 1GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. According to Vertu, its smartphones have 184 individual parts. The body is made by Grade 5 titanium, and has a set of Bang and Olufsen stereo speakers. The sapphire crystal renders the screen virtually scratch-proof and it is tested to be four times stronger than other smartphones in terms of impact resistance, it had claimed. Vertu was later acquired from Swedish private equity group EQT by a consortium of Chinese investors.

Star-studded films give you visibility: Angana Roy

Actress Angana Roy, who has been a part of recent star-studded films like Mahesh Babu-starrer "Srimanthudu" and Udhayanidhi Stalin's "Manithan", feels such films serve as a great platform to garner visibility for other actors in the project. "When you work with a superstar like Mahesh Babu, you're bound to get noticed by a large section of the audience. Even though my portion in the film was limited, I got lot of visibility via the role.
Big films give you that kind of visibility," Angana told IANS. In "Manithan", she played Hansika Motwani's sister. "You can look at it in two ways. If you want to reach out to the masses, working in a star-studded films really helps. I think the star power in any project gives one the visibility that other projects don't offer," she said. Angana's latest Telugu release is "Sri Sri", which released in cinemas today.

"It's not easy to bag a good role in a male-dominated industry. In 'Sri Sri', where I play a full-fledged role, I consider myself the hero of the film. The story revolves around me and it's in a film like this I get to prove my capability," she said. The film, according to Angana, is a revenge drama based on a Marathi film. "It was an honour to work with veteran actor Krishna, who was Telugu cinema's first superstar.
I play his daughter and the film also features his wife Vijaya Nirmala. They treated me like their own daughter and even invited me home," she said. "Sri Sri" features Mahesh Babu's voice-over. He was also supposed to play a cameo. "He got stuck with the shoot and release of 'Brahmotsavam', and hence, he couldn't be part of the project. Instead, the makers roped in his brother-in-law Sudheer Baby has played his part," she said. Angana has a project each in Tamil and Telugu in her kitty.

Anderson can surpass my wickets tally in Tests: McGrath

MELBOURNE
Melbourne, June 4 (IANS) Legendary Australian pacer Glenn McGrath said on Saturday that England quick James Anderson can go on to surpass his tally of 563 Test wickets, provided the latter stays fit.
Anderson breezed past the 450 milestone in England's most recent Test against Sri Lanka this week. He now has 451 scalps to his credit, 112 less than that of McGrath.
The Australian is fourth on the list with the likes of legendary Sri Lankan off-spinner Muthiah Muralitharan (800), leg-spin great Shane Warne (708) and former India captain Anil Kumble (619) preceding him.
"That's entirely up to him; if he stays on the park, then he can do that quite easily - and knock me off. And good luck to him," McGrath was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.
"He's a quality bowler, there's no doubt about that. When he's firing and the ball's swinging, he's as tough (to face) as any bowler going around," McGrath said.
"He's played 115 Tests now, which for a fast bowler to play over 100 is exceptional. He's still bowling well, and he's still taking wickets."
