Youth files complaint against Tamil actor Suriya for 'assault'

Tuesday, 31 May 2016

However, the actor has denied attacking the youth and said he intervened because he saw them harassing an old woman.

A complaint has been filed against Tamil superstar Suriya in an alleged case of assault, where he has been accused of attacking a youth who was having an altercation with a woman.

The complainant is a first division football player named Premkumar, who claims that he and his friend were travelling on a bike, when the car in front of them stopped suddenly, which made them lose control and slam into the rear end of the car.

The driver of the car, who was a woman, came out and began scolding them for rash driving, following which some people also reportedly came in support of the youth.

Surya, who was driving by, reportedly stopped by and intervened in the altercation which further heated up the situation and resulted in the actor allegedly slapping the youth, asking why he was fighting.

The actor has however denied attacking the boys and has claimed that he saw the boys manhandling the women, which is when he tried to rescue her and intervened.

Premkumar has filed a complaint at the Shastri Nagar police station and an FIR is yet to be registered in the matter.

The actor's manager has issued a statement saying, "The two youngsters in a bike had hit an old lady near Adyar and were harassing her when Suriya passed that location. He stopped his car and intervened, questioning the two youngsters.

Suriya had immediately informed the police about this incident and then left. He had also left his assistant on the spot to assist the police. But taking advantage of Suriya's absence, the two youths filed a false complaint against Suriya."

Include Dalit Christians, fishermen in SC/ST: Karunanidhi to Modi

He demanded that fishermen community should be included in the ST category as marine tribes.
DMK President M Karunanidhi on Sunday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to include Dalit Christians and fishermen community in Scheduled Tribes list.
Thanking Modi for the recent Cabinet's decision to include Narikuravars in the list of Scheduled Tribes, he said it was a demand made by DMK for a very long time and expressed satisfaction that it had been fulfilled.
On his demand for including Dalit Christians in the SC/ST category, Karunanidhi said, "when SC/STs convert themselves to Christianity, they are deprived of all the privileges and concessions hitherto enjoyed by them. "DMK has been demanding that the SC/STs after conversion to Christianity should be treated as SC/STs and allowed all concessions and privileges," he said, adding there were precedents such as recognition of Sikh Christians and Buddhist Christians.

He also said the fishermen community should be included in the ST category as marine tribes. "The fishermen community, by their very geographical nature, is socially and educationally akin to the Scheduled Tribes." Their inclusion in ST list, which they "deserve in all respects", would enable them to climb up the ladder of life, Karunanidhi said.
Karunanidhi requested Modi to "consider the two demands and sought an early action by the government." Last week, the Union Cabinet gave its approval for inclusion of three communities, including Narikuravar, from the state under the Scheduled Tribes category.

Final Reusable Launch Vehicle RLV-TD will need a better body to be launched into space: ISRO

The rocket will have to be modified with a more sustainable body before it is finally launched into space.

The body of India's first ever indigenously built reusable space shuttle - the Reusable Launch Vehicle - Technology Demonstrator (RLV-TD) - will need to be made of better material to enable it to be launched into space, said director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), K Sivan, on Wednesday.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully test launched RLV-TD on Monday from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota island of Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing the media on Wednesday after the feat, Sivan said the rocket will have to be modified with a more sustainable body before it is finally launched into space.

"The aluminum material, after 150 degrees Celsius, it will become dilute. Steel, it will become dilute at 500 degrees Celsius. You just imagine what will happen to a material if it is at 2,000 degrees Celsius. It will evaporate.

So we need a protection system against that one and we need a material which is working in the high temperature. That is another thing. We need autonomous mission management, another thing," Sivan said in Chennai.

The VSSC director also suggested ways to make the vehicle more cost-effective.

"80% of the cost of the rocket and of the materials that cost, only 15-20% are consumables like propellant
Suppose, in the rocket, 80% of the rocket, if we recover 80% of the rocket, that means 80% of the money we can recover.

That is simple technology. That means every time only 20% of the cost will be required to launch a satellite," added Sivan.

The test launch was intended to enable scientists to gather data on autonomous landing, hypersonic speed and more.
It's success puts India on an elite list of space-faring nations, including the United States, Japan and Russia, which have been using their own RLVs for years.

Tamil Nadu to implement 50% reservation for women in local bodies

A village panchayat must have only 500 voters.
Local bodies across Tamil Nadu will soon have more women representatives. Come October, a special bill that was introduced in February 2016, by Chief Minister
J Jayalalithaa will be implemented.
The Deccan Chronicle reported that the state development ministry and rural authorities have intimated all the district collectors to implement delimitation and increase the number of wards in the civic bodies.

DMK councillor Kalaichelvi Jothikumar told the daily, “The wards in civic bodies were classified 25 years back. Since then no efforts were taken to delimit the ward boundaries and this is a good move as it will decentralise the public and their civic issues.” A village panchayat should have only 500 voters but, currently, there are several wards in the state where there are more than 1500 voters.
After the new delimitation, civic polls will be held in the state. Congress councillor Sheela Prabhakaran of Tambaram municipality welcomed the move as more women will have representation in the council halls.

New Delhi and Colombo's nod necessary for Jaya-Wigneswaran meeting

COLOMBO: Prior permission of the Sri Lankan government and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) will be necessary for any meeting between the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa and C.V.Wigneswaran Chief Minister of Sri Lanka's Tamil-majority Northern Province, officials sources told Express here on Monday.

At the outset, like other Ministers, Wigneswaran will have to get the sanction of Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena before he goes overseas. He also has to make a written request for a meeting with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to the Indian High Commission in Colombo, which will in turn pass it on to the MEA in New Delhi along with its recommendation.

The MEA will, in turn, contact the Tamil Nadu government for its views on the request. The TN government's reply will be sent back to Wigneswaran using the same official route.

When the meeting does take place, an official of the MEA will be present. The official could either be from the MEA's office at Chennai or somebody from New Delhi, designated by the MEA.

Official sources said that protocol does not allow private meetings and any meeting that takes place will have to be official, arranged through the proper channel.

In his congratulatory message sent to the freshly elected Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Wigneswaran had expressed a wish to have a meeting with her and Ms. Jayalalithaa had said that a meeting could take place at a mutually convenient time.

Request From Indian Origin Tamils

The Indian High Commission is already processing an application for a meeting with Jayalalithaa from the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), a political party of Indian-Origin Tamils led by Mano Ganeshan, Lankan Cabinet Minister of National Dialogue.

The MEA is expected to push TPA's case because the Indian Origin Tamils in Sri Lanka are of particular interest to India. However, it remains to be seen if Jayalalithaa will give the TPA an appointment.

Tamil National Alliance

Although the Northern Provincial Council (NPC), dominated by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), unanimously passed a resolution on May 26 congratulating Jayalalithaa, the TNA's leadership has not asked for a meeting with her.

On May 29, the TNA chief and Leader of the Opposition in the Lankan parliament, R.Sampanthan, had sent a congratulatory letter to DMK leader M.Karunanidhi on his and the DMK's performance in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.

"The fact that you are elected for the 13 th. time to the Legislative Assembly is not an ordinary achievement. It is something which needs to be appreciated by everyone. Even though you are not able to get the required number of seats to capture power, you have got the status of a strong opposition party in Tamil Nadu. We seek your constructive participation for getting a fair and permanent solution to the Tamil people's problem in Sri Lanka," Sampanthan said.

JHU's Opposition

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan cabinet minister and Jathika Hela Urumaya leader Champika Ranawaka has opposed Wigneswaran's bid to discuss the Lankan Tamil problem with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister saying that the matter should be resolved locally.

Aussie batsman Warner, key behind SRH's success

From a tempestuous cricketer and a winning captain. The metamorphosis has been complete for Australian David Warner. His batting pedigree was never in doubt since he broke into the Aussie team and was a sought-after batsman in IPL. It was his temperament that was letting him down and put him in trouble on occasions.

He has turned things around rather brilliantly and his captaincy was one of the reasons for Sunrisers Hyderabad capturing the title in IPL 2016. Indian Test captain and RCB leader Virat Kohli had heaped praise during the pre-final media meet on Saturday and said like his opposite number (Warner), there was a fierce will to win in him.
It was a high-scoring and tense finale and SRH won because they were calmer. Warner has been an inspirational leader for the team and was at the forefront with a classy half-century to boot.
Despite facing a fearsome assault from the big RCB opener Chris Gayle, the SRH team kept fighting and once they saw an opening, they stepped up the pressure and choked the fancied Bengaluru outfit out of contention.
"One of the things that go through your mind with a guy like Gayle (is that) he'll always keep going. The hardest thing is to try and maintain our composure while he's going and playing like this," Warner said after the triumph.
"When I spoke to the bowlers, I told them to keep backing themselves and our plan was to bowl wide to him and bowl slower balls. If he hits you for a six, then so be it 'well done, great shot'."
At 100 for no wicket in 9 overs, Warner was running out of options while the home side was running away with the chase. Yet, in a breakthrough lay Sunrisers' route to recovery.
"We always knew if we get a wicket, or two wickets, it is going to be hard for the next person to come in and play their shots. So for us, it was about staying composed and having belief," Warner said.
As he said staying calm mattered most and despite going for runs, the bowlers stuck to the task and in the end that was crucial. Warner has shown that he can lead by example and his runs were key to Hyderabad's victorious run. In the Qualifier-2, he single-handely took SRH to a win and this is a sign of his increasing maturity as a player.
For someone, who was seen as a basher, suited to the shorter formats, Warner has show he can hold his own in Tests too and the Aussie think-tank will be happy with the manner in which the batsman has adapted in varying conditions and also led the team to an unexpected tournament victory.

This chaiwala's free WiFi service fetched him young customers across Karur

KARUR: Piping hot cuppa, along with the morning newspapers and equally hot gossip is what tea shops have relied on for generations to attract customers. But a tea shop owner here has added a twist to attract the younger generation by offering absolutely free WiFi. No strings attached, so you don't need to buy tea to use the WiFi. Also, you can use it for as long as you want. Cool, isn't it?

No wonder, Ramakrishnan, owner of the Sethu Tea-Coffee outlet, has youngsters from surrounding villages and colleges hooked to his joint.

"The monthly charge for the unlimited WiFi is about D1,500. But it has helped me gain more business," he says. Earlier a lorry driver, Ramakrishnan ventured into the eatery business to try and make a difference as an entrepreneur. "I have a customer who travels 10 km everyday at 5 am for a cup of tea and free Internet," he says beaming with pride. The shop has now become a hard-to-miss landmark on the Karur-Esanatham road. Anyone crossing the shop can find youngsters lounging around glued to their devices. Students from Thanthonimalai Government Arts and Science College are among his loyal customers. "It is not necessary to buy tea or coffee to use the WiFi connection and we do not restrict people from staying as long as they want," quips Ramakrishnan. "Apart from providing WiFi, I also try and keep my premises clean."

For the Union government that is embarking on a massive digital inclusion mission targeting the rural areas, people like Ramakrishnan could be the torchbearers.
