Harare, June 8: India's One Day International (ODI) captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is set to reach another milestone in his glittering limited overs career.
Ind-Zim tour schedule and squad
Dhoni, who will lead a young side in 3 ODIs and 3 Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) against Zimbabwe starting on Saturday (June 11) in Harare, is set to join the 9,000-run club in the 50-over internationals format.
The 34-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman starts the series needing 82 more runs for the landmark. So far, he has accumulated 8,918 runs in 275 ODIs.
Since making his debut against Bangladesh in December 2004, Dhoni has emerged as one of the best limited overs players in the world. Dhoni is the only captain in history to have won all the 3 global trophies. He first led India to 2007 World T20 triumph and in 2011 hit the most famous six in World Cup history to seal the trophy.
In 2013, he took India to Champions Trophy glory. When Dhoni gets to the 9,000-run mark in ODIs, which is likely to happen during the Zimbabwe tour, he will become only the 5th Indian in the elite club. Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar heads the list with 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs. He is also the overall leader in the world.
Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Azharuddin are the other three. Dhoni and his team-mates left for Harare today (June 8). At the pre-departure press conference in Mumbai yesterday, he said, "I think it will be a very different experience (for me), the reason being you keep playing with almost the same group of players, so you know the roles and responsibility.
There will be quite a few players in this bilateral series whom I will be playing with for the first time."
Indians who have scored 9,000 plus runs in ODIs
1. Sachin Tendulkar - 18,426 runs (463 matches)
2. Sourav Ganguly - 11,363 (311)
3. Rahul Dravid - 10,889 (344)
4. Mohammad Azharuddin - 9,378 (334)
